We offer professional grooming for most breeds of dogs and cats. The groom starts with the complete cut or just a trim, we groom how you request, then we follow with a warm bath using a low flow spray nozzle so as not to scare your pet. This is when we express the anal glands and wash away any smells. My bather, Rita, (daughter)uses all Hypo-allergenic, Tearless shampoos and finally follows with a wonderful smelling spray on conditioner that keeps the coat soft and smelling good for along time after.
Next comes the dry, we use a hands free, warm air dryer as your pet sits on the table looking out the window, they like this, it lets them think about playing outside. After the coat is dry, I finish off brushing, styling, and a final touch of a bandana for boys, and bows and nail polish for the girls.
All this takes about an hour to do on an average size dog. An hour and a half on larger ones. If you are just needing a bath for your larger furry pet, you may allow up to 2 hours for drying.
We strive to let you know of anything we feel should warrent a vets attention.
In dogs, these glands are occasionally referred to as "anal sacs" or "scent glands", because they enable the animals to mark their territory and identify other dogs. The glands can spontaneously empty, especially under times of stress, and create a very sudden unpleasant change in the odor of the dog. Dog feces are normally firm, and the anal glands usually empty when the dog defecates, lubricating the anal opening in the process. When the dog's stools are soft they may not exert enough pressure on the glands, which then may fail to empty. This may cause discomfort as the full anal gland pushes on the anus. The glands can be emptied by the dog's keeper, or more typically by a groomer or veterinarian, by squeezing the gland so the contents are released through the small openings on either side of the anus. Discomfort is evidenced by the dog dragging its posterior on the ground, licking or biting at the anus, sitting uncomfortably, having difficulty sitting or standing, or chasing its tail.
Discomfort may also be evident with impaction or infection of the anal glands. Anal gland impaction results from blockage of the duct leading from the gland to the opening. The gland is usually nonpainful and swollen. Anal gland infection results in pain, swelling, and sometimes fever. Treatment is by expression of the gland, lancing of an abscess, and oral anti-biotic and antibiotic infusion into the gland in the case of infection
